In the Quebrada and the Puna regions of Jujuy, there is a unique way of honoring the deceased that stems from the indigenous peoples. In the last days of October, preparations begin to welcome the souls: paper flowers, the ritual of kneading bread into shapes of staircases, doves, llamas, and moons, and the long table set up next to the door so that the souls can easily see it as they descend. This trip invites you to experience this ritual up close with the community of Hornaditas, as well as to participate in pottery and weaving workshops with the Wichi community of Santa Victoria Este, in Salta.

Souls' Day Ceremony
Hornaditas Community
Guided by the Lamas family, the group participates in a workshop on shaping the offerings: hand-crafted breads in shapes that represent loved ones—stairs, doves, llamas, moons—along with water, flowers, and chicha morada. Then the Day of the Souls table is set up—long and large—and placed near the door so that the souls can easily see it as they descend. The experience is rounded out by the ceremony itself, during which memories, flavors, and the belief that we are together with our beloved souls are shared.
El Caserío, Cuesta de Bárcena
Featuring artist Guadalupe Miles
Just over thirty kilometers from San Salvador de Jujuy, Bárcena is a hidden gem that isn’t visible from the highway at first glance. There, you’ll find El Caserío, a residence for artists and a gathering place for promoting contemporary art—and this is where the journey begins. Guadalupe Miles runs this community space and develops cultural and educational projects that help strengthen the Iowaja and Wichi communities, fostering active dialogue with various cultural actors in the Salta Chaco.
Wichi Pottery Workshop

Wichi pottery workshop led by Isabel Ruarte, a master artisan from the Santa Victoria Este community in Salta. The workshop includes the traditional firing of the pieces crafted by the group.

A workshop that immerses the group in the tradition of this ancestral craft, led by the same master artisan who guides the ceramics workshop.
Visit to Red Puna
Artisans' Cooperatives, Tilcara
Red Puna welcomes the group to Tilcara, led by General Coordinator Liliana Martínez, who shares what lies behind every gesture of an artisan and their work: the processes that take place before and after a piece is created, and the connection each piece has with its creator and their community. The tour includes a regional lunch and a visit to the local market.
Traditional Cuisine
With Anita Ponce, Tilcara
An ancestral cooking workshop and lunch at El Patio de Hornillos, led by Anita Ponce, who cooks outdoors using her grandmother’s recipe book.
Hornacal
A visit to Hornacal to explore the landscape of the Quebrada de Humahuaca and the “Hill of 14 Colors,” its flora, its fauna, and its connection to the colors and textures of the textiles.
Purmamarca
A self-guided tour of the town of Purmamarca, which in the Aymara language means “city of the desert”—also “town of the Virgin Land”—and in Quechua, “town of the lion.”
ITINERARY
DAY 1 • WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 28
Morning: ABRA Textil meets the group at the San Salvador de Jujuy airport. Transfer and accommodations in Cuesta de Bárcena. Immersion day with women artisans from the Wichi community of Santa Victoria de Salta. Traditional pottery workshop.
Evening: Welcome dinner shared with the artisans at the lodging in El Caserío.
DAY 2 • THURSDAY, OCTOBER 29
Morning: Chaguar fiber weaving workshop led by Isabel, a Wichi artisan. Abra lunch at El Caserío.
Afternoon: Ancestral firing of ceramic pieces.
Evening: Closing dinner at El Caserío and farewell to the artisans.
DAY 3 • FRIDAY, OCTOBER 30
Morning: Transfer to Hornaditas. Preparations for the Day of the Souls. Workshop on making offerings in the community of Hornaditas. Lunch at the Lamas family’s home.
Afternoon: Setting the table for the Day of the Souls, guided by the Lamas family.
Evening: Free time in Humahuaca.
DAY 4 • SATURDAY, OCTOBER 31
Morning: Transfer to Tilcara. Visit to the market. Discussion with artisans from RED PUNA. Lunch and traditional cooking workshop at El Patio Hornillos with Anita Ponse.
Afternoon: Free time in Tilcara.
Evening: Free time in Humahuaca.
DAY 5 • SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 1
Morning: All Souls’ Day ceremony in the community of Hornaditas. Lunch on your own in Humahuaca.
Afternoon: Free time to explore the markets of
Humahuaca or visit El Hornocal.
Evening: Farewell dinner at the Tantanakuy Cultural Center.
DAY 6 • MONDAY, NOVEMBER 2
Morning: Transfer to San Francisco de Alfarcito. Shared lunch provided by the community.
Afternoon: Guided tour of a fairytale village.
Evening: Stargazing in Alfarcito. Overnight stay in San Francisco de Alfarcito.
DAY 7 • TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 3
Morning: Breakfast and farewell to the Alfarcito community. Lunch on your own in Purmamarca.
Afternoon: Free time in Purmamarca. Transfer to the airport. End of the ABRA TEXTIL tour. Return to Buenos Aires.
